Enabling a Device without using device manager

Hi All,

I wanted to create an alternative toolset that grants you the ability to control several components in one GUI.

One of things I wanted to add is the ability to enable/disable devices like "device manager". Is there any way to do it directly, without opening the device manager?

I looked at DevCon but it requires a separate installation that I wanted to avoid.

Just a clarification, DevCon does not require installation on your target PCs. You have to install the Windows DDK in order to get the tools you want, but you can do this on a virtual machine and then later revert.

Hi, Sorry for re-opening the issue.

I have tried devcon, works great but it requires admin privileges which I can't have when the users execute my script.

DeviceAPI is really nice and it retrieves all of the information needed but I didn't manage to understand how to enable/disable devices with it.

If there's any solution I will be glad to know. Thank you very much for all the kind assistance.

You can always do a RunAs for DevCon if that is acceptable for your security environment.

I'm pretty sure that you'd need admin credentials to disable a device regardless of what program you use to do it.

Hello. To disable a device using  DeviceAPI you need to have admin privileges. Device manager does not ask for admin rights because it  can run elevated without a UAC prompt due is windows Legitimate executable.

Yes, devmgr can run without being elevated (similaly so can Task Manager), but (it should) present a warning stating so and won't allow any device changes...at least in my experience with it.

I think most people are used to it, but in environments (AD Domains for example) where user's don't have Admin rights it's something to be aware of, particularly if deploying/executing a script is involved.

Thanks everyone. I am trying to use setupapi.dll directly... As I currently understand it using it will not require Admin privileges. Please, Correct me if I'm wrong

You will need to use #RequiereAdmin. If you still want to use setupapi.dll, probably I can help you to write the code.
