Why not disable the button after it is pressed?

I second that, or you could use a global variable to track the "status" of the script and have the button press function check the variable state before executing.  Disabling the button is easy enough though.

So, only one copy of the script should run at a time.

There is _singleton: "Enforce a design paradigm where only one instance of the script may be running".
