legend Posted April 28, 2015 Share Posted April 28, 2015 Hello,If I encrypt a file, using: _Crypt_EncryptFile, and try to decrypt it with : _Crypt_DecryptFile, BUT, with a wrong password, then it will dropa 1 kb file, witch obviously isn't working, but isn't it possible that it can detect if the password was wrong instead of creating this 1 kb file? Of course it could be argued that the new file shouldn't be created before the data has been decrypted. So in that case file a bug report. iamtheky Posted April 28, 2015 Share Posted April 28, 2015 When allowed, especially with encryption, I prefer success and failure to feel the exact same.A 1kb of zero width white spaces could communicate a fair amount of information. Giving any indication to the end-user that the decryption key is wrong would eliminate the option to have both failures and successes result in a 1kb 'blank' file. You're over thinking the issue, but the function should definitely delete the file if the password is wrong. Which by the way also indicates that the password is wrong, because there's no file there. Apps like WinZip and MS Office don't just no work or give garbage output if the password is incorrect. If you care about the end-user in this way and want to verify the password you could store a hash of the password, verify the hash is correct then pass the raw password to the encryption algo. I do love encryption.I think the result, to a party who knows nothing of the content, should be indiscernible between success and failure. Every return should mean 'could be a bad password, could be the correct info, could be corrupt data, gfy'. If the function allows me to do that I would be pleased. If I would have known this always resulted with 1kb files, I would have totally used the UDF and broken the messages up (rather than the monstrosity I made with a genius piece of encryption that no longer exists on the forums). thinking out loud: if every 1kb chunk has a different key or salt, that doesnt require too much more effort design wise, but certainly increases the difficulty in cracking the entire message. That makes no sense, if the decryption worked, it's decrypted, which is vastly different than if it failed. So if it's indiscernible that you've decrypted it, how useful is the function? I have a stego script here, http://www.codematterings.com/uncategorized/autoit-corner that converts a jpg to binary, then assigns no width white spaces to 1s and 0s (to be written back to an rtf which was then encrypted).If the correct key was provided you get the characters in the correct order, if not I randomly write the same amount of no-width white spaces to a file and return that. To the outside observer, the results are only vastly different inasmuch as shuffled decks of cards are vastly different.Just input and output, no msgs, no dialogs. With the usefulness of the output determined by the operator, either by checksum or execution. In my experience with crypto solutions this is far more the standard than the exception. Again, if we are muddling UX with what error levels are available to the developer then I apologize, as I think I may have started that.
