$hWnd = Handle to the control 

This is incorrect, the function works with either a Control-ID or a control handle.

The example program shows GUICtrlCreateEdit()returning a value into the variable named ""$hEdit"", which is technically incorrect, as GUICtrlCreateEdit() returns only a Control-ID.
