AutoIt3 Portable Edition

Only one change needs to be made to one file to make SciTe portable, and no rearranging of folders is necessary. It doesn't look like everyone is aware (maybe one or two) of the folder redirection available in the au3.properties file.

Just change this one line in 'au3.properties' using Notepad:

autoit3dir=C:\Program Files\AutoIt3

to:

autoit3dir=$(SciteDefaultHome)\..

After that, no more changes are necessary no matter what PC you run it on. (at least until the next version of SciTE overwrites that)

As for a launcher that keeps things out of the %userprofile% folder (and saves them to the portable folder), without resorting to a resident app, it couldn't be easier..

Place either a shortcut or batch file in your root AutoIt3 folder (keeping the same structure as an install would):

Shortcut (in AutoIt3 folder):

AutoIt3.exe /autoit3executeline "Dim $sScite=@ScriptDir&'\SciTE',$y=EnvSet('SciTE_HOME',$sScite),$z=Run($sScite&'\SciTE.exe',$sScite)"

Batch file (in AutoIt3 folder):

@echo OFF
set SciTE_HOME=%~dp0\SciTE
start SciTE\scite.exe

If you check my new code that's what I did by using EnvSet and changing the location au3.properties. I simply made a launcher with the channce to turn sessions on/off.

Your version creates unnecessary complications with extra folders, and configuration of variables that don't really matter as far as 'portablizing' SciTE. You don't even really need a script to change that one line in au3.properties that really matters - like I said, open it in notepad and alter it *once*, and you're done.

As for the environment variables, the shortcut I created is MUCH smaller than your compiled script and is quite simple to use. One can easily use that, or place a shortcut to the exe and paste the command-line in the right field for a portable launcher (like PStart), or alternatively use the small batch file for launching the program.

*edit: PStart allows you to set environment variables, so you can even use that to directly launch SciTE - that is if the environment variables accept PStart vars like '%pdrive%'

OK, I have taken your comments on board. The folder structure is the same as PortableApps.com and I didn't think to use autoit3dir=$(SciteDefaultHome)\..

It works fine for me.

Unless you've altered some other settings within the properties file or whatnot, it should work as expected, assuming you run SciTE *IN* the SciTE folder (double check that you are making that the start folder).

All the tools including Help will look in the parent folder which is what '\..' appended to $(SciteDefaultHome) means. If you rearranged the folder structure more, then you'll need to provide a new relative path.

Fixed! Was using EnvSet("SciTE_HOME", @ScriptDir & "\SciTe\") but it should have been EnvSet("SciTE_HOME", @ScriptDir & "\SciTe") So I am sorry for my stupidity ;)

Tks!

Now It can open SciTE Help file =)

But, AutoIt's Help (F1) don't open anymore. It doesn't appear any message either. When I click it or press F1, "nothing happens"... ;)

Install AutoIt3 and SciTE, copy the files to your portable device (except uninstall.exe), then uninstall it.

Follow the steps posted above to portablize SciTE, and the tools launched from within SciTE should work as well. (or create shortcuts to those tools manually)

I tried the portable autoit to test 3.3.6 version in a computer where a 3.3.0 version is already installed and it didn´t work. :)

It runs new Scite version and in fact it compiles with 3.3.6 compiler (interpreter), but there is a problem with syntax checking because it is executing au3Check.exe old version (1.54.14.0). And so I can compile with 3.3.6 autoit3.exe... but only sources that are compatible with 3.3.0.

When I try to compile a 3.3.6 source (for instance with InetRead or AdlibRegister instead of InetGet or AdlibEnable) the old au3Check exits with an error (it is checking 3.3.0 syntax and functions and doesn´t recognize InetRead or AdlibRegister) and it doesn´t reach the compiling step :-(

Scite is correctly executed, since it paints InetRead or AdlibRegister in a blue font, for instance.

Source codes compatible with au3Check 1.54.14.0 (the old one) are correctly compiled with autoit3.exe v3.3.6.1. So at least in the compiler it is using portable version.

There's something that maybe is checking the system register to find au3Check, regardless of "autoit3dir=$(SciteDefaultHome)\.." in au3.properties and SciTE_HOME in shortcut or BAT file...

I wouldn't like to modify the register, since I don't want to change the configuration of the installed autoit but execute my own autoit portable version with its own configuration not related to the installed one.

I don't know whether it is related to au3Check problem, but F1 is not opening AutoIt help, either. :)

I modified the batch file slightly so that it can be run from anywhere, as long as the batch file itself is in the AutoIt3 folder.

@echo OFF
pushd %~dp0
set SciTE_HOME=%~p0SciTE
start %SciTE_HOME%\scite.exe
popd

I used a batch file in the root directory of the thumb drive to call the batch file in the AutoIt3 directory, less clicking that way. :)

Thank you, but I'am afraid that's not the problem.

Even with this BAT file, au3Check is executed from "Program Files", so it is executing an older installed version.

This is the output of a compilation with the portable version.

>"\Luis\AutoitPortable\App\SciTE\AutoIt3Wrapper\AutoIt3Wrapper.exe" /prod /AU3Check /in "D:\AutoItProgs\MiraForo.au3"
+>13:51:19 Starting AutoIt3Wrapper v.2.0.1.24    Environment(Language:0C0A  Keyboard:0000040A  OS:WIN_XP/Service Pack 3  CPU:X64 OS:X86)
>Running AU3Check (1.54.14.0)  from:C:\Archivos de programa\AutoIt3
D:\AutoItProgs\MiraForo.au3(6,34) : ERROR: InetRead(): undefined function.
Global $sData = InetRead($httpdir)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~^
D:\AutoItProgs\MiraForo.au3 - 1 error(s), 0 warning(s)
!>13:51:19 AU3Check ended.rc:2
>Exit code: 0    Time: 0.420
As you can see AutoIt3Wrapper.exe is correctly executed from the portable directory (\Luis\AutoitPortable\App\) but au3Check.exe is executed from C:\Archivos de programa\AutoIt3 (the Spanish system folder for Program Files)
Scite Editor is also the one in the portable folder. All is correct, except for au3Check.exe, the installed version is executed, and that one is not synced with the compiler/interpreter... :)
Maybe AutoIt3Wrapper is looking for au3Check in the system registry?
It uses autoit3.exe from the portable directory, though, only the syntax checher fails.
Thankyou for your time.
Actually, looking at the AutoIt3Wrapper code, the location for Au3Check is hardcoded for the Program Files directory. You'd need to look to see all of the places that the @ProgramFilesDir is used in that script and change them to use the SciTE_HOME environment variable instead.
If you look through the AutoIt3Wrapper code, you'll see a lot of places that the @ProgramFilesDir macro is used to set paths to programs to be run by the Wrapper, so it would be an big undertaking to make sure you got them all to make it truly portable. I suppose you could to a global Find/Replace and swap them all, but you might break something else by doing that.
If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.
Hum, I don't understand why that is hardcoded. When you install Autoit it asks you where to install it, doesn't it? It could be in a different folder from Program Files...
And it makes the portable version unusable! (when using in a computer with an installed version, I mean)
Well, changing the source of the wrapper without breaking anything can be challenging. Besides, it would be a tedious task to do it in every version.
Looking at the source I can see the wrapper can receive a "/Autoit3Dir" parameter, that uses to set its $INP_AutoitDir variable, where it looks for the programs like au3Check...
Would it be possible (and easy) to change something in the Scite configuration so that /Autoit3Dir is set to the portable directory when running the wrapper?
EDIT: I ANSWER MYSELF -> YES!
That's it! Two more changes (at least) are needed in au3.properties, adding /autoit3dir parameter:
Line 86 (au3Check), from
command.3.$(au3)="$(SciteDefaultHome)\AutoIt3Wrapper\AutoIt3Wrapper.exe" /prod /AU3Check /in "$(FilePath)"
to
command.3.$(au3)="$(SciteDefaultHome)\AutoIt3Wrapper\AutoIt3Wrapper.exe" /prod /AU3Check /in "$(FilePath)" /autoit3dir "$(autoit3dir)"
Line 93 (au3Check for beta), from
bcommand.4="$(SciteDefaultHome)\AutoIt3Wrapper\AutoIt3Wrapper.exe" /beta /AU3Check /in "$(FilePath)"
to
bcommand.4="$(SciteDefaultHome)\AutoIt3Wrapper\AutoIt3Wrapper.exe" /beta /AU3Check /in "$(FilePath)" /autoit3dir "$(autoit3dir)"
Now au3check is executed from the portable directory.
But we haven't finished...
There's another line using the wrapper without /autoit3dir parameter, it's 280, related to autocomplete.
That doesn't work! :) Adding /autoit3dir "$(autoit3dir)" does not help and I don't know what to change here...
Autocomplete words are recognized, for instance if I write "cw" it is in a red font, but when I press spacebar, it gets stuck, it doesn't expand to "ConsoleWrite( $ @CRLF)" but it doesn't write the space character, either!
Have you used it in a computer with a previosly installed version? And a different one, of course, for instance a v3.3.0.0 and a v3.3.6.1
Are the installed and portable versions executing their own programs (compiler, checker, obfuscator, etc...)?
