Using @ScriptLineNumber for error checking

Not when you crash, which seems to be what JohnOne is talking about, (but not what the OP is doing) which is admittedly a little strange. If the crash dialog know the line why can't @ScriptLineNumber?

I think this is because normaly when you just run script and it is not compiled then you have ScriptLineNumber related to each AU3 file separately.
When you have crash in compiled version then there is only one big AU3 file in memory.

I mean if you just run your script and crash will be fired inside separate UDF File then you will get line according to this UDF fIile.
But if you compile your script then you get different line number.

The same behavior is with @ScriptLineNumber you must remember about: When you not compiled script then @ScriptLineNumber is according to each AU3 file separately.

This particular differences can raise confusion .

Anticipating Errors :  "Any program that accepts data from a user must include code to validate that data before sending it to the data store. You shouldn't be compiling the script until you know it won't crash at all. A properly constructed script won't crash. If you're testing this, and it only crashes after being compiled, that says that there's still something wrong in your script and you should find out what it is before you ever think of compiling it.

I once had a script that would crash after I compiled it, and finally figured out that it was because when I compiled it, I had the exe created in another folder. When I ran the script compiled, and it crashed, was because I had been referencing a file by a relative pathname, and the file wasn't in the same place after I compiled it and it crashed because it couldn't find the file. The reason it crashed was because I failed to do proper error checking to see if the file was found or not before I tried to process it. Would it have been helpful to know where the line was in the script when it crashed? Probably would have saved me a few minutes of troubleshooting, but I still found the issue after I properly debugged the script.

All that being said, you can't find out what the line number is in a compiled script with any certainty, and you most definitely can't find out use @ScriptLineNumber. Debug your script and you won't need the script to spoon feed you the line number.

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

I think the term crash is being misused here. I guess most of you mean AutoIt error/exception. As a crash is quite a serious occurrence, where as an AutoIt error is basically AutoIt protecting you from bad programming.

I define a crash as anything that causes the program to stop running, with or without an error message. When AutoIt encounters an untrapped error, it stops the script from running, most people would say that the program has crashed.

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

In short, AutoIt terminating the run after encountering an error it can't handle is pretty different from a crash where the OS itself kills the program after an OS-level exception (like accessing memory outside the allocated space).

This wonderful site allows debugging and testing regular expressions (many flavors available). An absolute must have in your bookmarks.
Another excellent RegExp tutorial. Don't forget downloading your copy of up-to-date pcretest.exe and pcregrep.exe here

PCRE v8.33 regexp documentation latest available release and currently implemented in AutoIt beta.

SQLitespeed is another feature-rich premier SQLite manager (includes import/export). Well worth a try.
SQLite Expert (freeware Personal Edition or payware Pro version) is a very useful SQLite database manager.
An excellent eBook covering almost every aspect of SQLite3: a must-read for anyone doing serious work.
SQL tutorial (covers "generic" SQL, but most of it applies to SQLite as well)
A work-in-progress SQLite3 tutorial. Don't miss other LxyzTHW pages!
SQLite official website with full documentation (may be newer than the SQLite library that comes standard with AutoIt)

Lets back up here a little bit

I have one or two scripts where i have a problem.

No the script does not crash at all

 i use this on every script

#AutoIt3Wrapper_AU3Check_Parameters=-d -w 1 -w 2 -w 3 -w- 4 -w 5 -w 6 -w- 7

i take great care with doing and redoing until i get it right but

I cant control UDFs that i use with my script and thats where the error is, but i cant find it because its thousands line into a script i cant see in entirety

I have an array error on one that only crashes now and again on  certain Vista machines but its so rare i cant begin to guess whats causing it.

And more often than not the UDFs are very complicated so i cant hope to tweak them.

More so if i cant find the line

This i think will help

#AutoIt3Wrapper_Run_Au3Stripper=y
#Au3Stripper_Parameters=/mo /rsln

as it allows me to see all the lines in the script in order so when i get the autoit error i can see the part where the error lies with a bit of work.

So lets not get carried away with bad scripts and crashing and all that stuff. Im trying to solve specific errors in long term script which its not feasible to add error check to other peoples work (UDF)

Remove the compiled script on this particular machine, install AutoIt on it and let the .au3 run. The next time the error pops up you'll know exactly where it comes from.

This is not always possible, for example:

  1. program source - script is commercial and you do not want to give client full code
  2. program source contain any passwords or something like that, so because of that you can not give a possibility to other company people to see company secret passwords

I didn't say it was possible in OP context, just a possibility in general. But note that both rebutals are easily circumvented by sister kid, so both points are pretty moot.

SQLitespeed is another feature-rich premier SQLite manager (includes import/export). Well worth a try.
SQLite Expert (freeware Personal Edition or payware Pro version) is a very useful SQLite database manager.
An excellent eBook covering almost every aspect of SQLite3: a must-read for anyone doing serious work.

I disagree, the first answer says what I said, the program has stopped.

So when a program crashes, it has literally given up and terminated execution.

This may not be the "official" definition of a crash, but to the users of AutoIt it pretty much says the same thing. The OS isn't crashing, the program has crashed/ended abruptly/stopped executing and failed back to the OS. It's not that the program has stopped responding, it has ended.

Semantics...

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

Remove the compiled script on this particular machine, install AutoIt on it and let the .au3 run. The next time the error pops up you'll know exactly where it comes from.

I do do this from time to time but it isnt always possible like mLipok
