Windows 10 - How To

Apparently to hide windows updates you don't need (Like my NVidia display drivers which are always older on MS than what NVidia actually has)

You need this tool

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930

Just note the "temporary" and "reinstall" part. It would probably be easier to let WU do it's thing, even if that means you are a few days behind.

Then I have NVidia complaining that my drivers need updated constantly. And I'd rather have the newer drivers. That was just 1 example anyway. Another would be the Razer Naga sound drivers they developed that completely mess with my machine, but Windows Update wants to install anyway.

*edit*

I should mention that MS says temporary as they figure you want every update installed so you will eventually install the update when a solution is found that doesn't mess up your system. In my case the solution is to never install the updates so I will never unhide them for WU to install them.

  • 3 weeks later...

I made the big blemish to upgrade from W7 Pro x64 to W10.

After the "upgrade" I discovered that many features (in Task bar, Start menu, context menus, ...) were not working at all. I was directed to ShellExView, a NirSoft utility able to display and manage shell extensions. It seems that due to some badly coded shell extensions added by some user programs, those features are not working.

I followed the advice to list all non-MS extensions and disable them until the culprit(s) are isolated. To my surprise, this didn't solve the issues and then I discovered that many newly installed Windows 10 MS shell extensions have a huge problem: file missing!

Here is the list of MS extensions declared but where the corresponding file is missing. Do any of you have seen something like that? I never messed with services and strategic registry entries. My W7 system worked well (as much as W7 can do) and I'm pretty sure this isn't the effect of malware. I didn't check every entry in this list but those I've checked have the correct file in the declared location...

Question to pro admins: what can I do now? Could it be that I only need to re-register those DLLs and then how should I do that from my admin account?

EDIT: never mind guys, I stepped down to W7 and not only for this issue.

Thanks for noticing Admiral. Indeed, when Dropbox context menu was re-enabled, it didn't work as expected and copied a wrong link...
