The old Control  Panel is listed under All Apps from the start menu, go to "Windows System" and you'll find it in there. You can  pin it to the start menu by right clicking the icon as well.

I just went in to adjust virtual ram or whatever it was called and couldn't find it so I went to check the old control panel and found that I don't have a windows system folder under all apps >:(

Ahh, I see :_

I did the win+x thing to get to it. It was just annoying that I didn't even have the standard system folder in the start menu. And now that I think about it, I don't think I have the startup folder either.

Well, I've finally finished upgrading all the PCs in the office (17). I reserved 800MBit/s downstream to get the ISO down and mounted on all machines (funny enough, this is faster than downloading once and copying individually). From there on it was a breeze, but here are some problems:

  • On 3  ASUS AiO touchscreen PCs, the upgrade failed spectacularly, because for pre-500M GT(X) GPUs, there are no drivers.
  • I did not bother upgrading the HP 355 business laptops, because Windows 10 force-installs a corrupted driver for Synaptic LuxPad touchpads (to the point where some keyboards did no longer work...)
  • There are still some UI issues on AMD APUs. I opened several tickets and they "are working on it".
  • It is not a good idea to upgrade if there is any kind of proprietary printer hooked up (bill/receipt printers, labeling machines, COPAL etc.), because - again - there are no drivers.

I'm really pissed at the driver manufacturer for our printers, because when examining the current driver, it becomes clear that the "incompatibility" is really just a badly-written OS-version lock :ranting:. The driver would probably work just fine.

But Win10 in itself is awesome. Another tip: To disable any automatic updates and only allow the Sysadmin (a different account than the admin since Win8) to make manual updates, use the Group policies. The ModernUI update panel does not have this setting anymore.

I will answer every single PM, and you are free to ask anything anytime.

Finally got around to my privacy settings, was astonished by the amount of data it sends out and allows apps to access by default.

And I really do not like options about sending data that you cannot turn off, diagnostic and usage data being the culprit. From what I can gather, this tells microsoft, and anyone else they like, amongst other things, everything that is installed on your computer.

Not a fan of that, but enjoying the rest of it so far.

I've noticed after installing Windows 10, I've got a lot of 0 byte temp(?) files in random places on my machine that weren't there before.

I've always had show file extensions and show hidden and system files so I know they weren't there before but I have files with no extension and random numbers and letters for a filename and nearly all are 0 byte.

Nothing's ever come up on scans with various scanners I use (which I've always done regularly, although I only visit a small handful of sites ever and they are all safe, like AutoIt, Amazon, Yahoo, Daz3D, etc.)

I got Win10Pro on my Dell Venue 8 first day with the manual download/media tool.

The upgrade went fine but it did break the bluetooth.  I was able to fix that by manually installing the Win 8 drivers again.

So far I think it fixed a lot of the issues my tablet had with Win 8.1 it seems more responsive, less picky about sleep/wake, and I like the tablet mode for the small 8" screen.  I just added the few relevant desktop shortcuts to the metro UI.

i'll update my laptop that I never use next, it will go from 7 to 10.  I am holding off with my desktop just because I have no real need for the update right now and I have a ton of programs, many of them small open source stuff that may not work and If I have to reinstall it will be a major pain with so many settings.

Taking an image as suggested is not a bad idea, just gotta find my acronis key/software.

The only issue I have run into thus far was with VMware Workstation. I use bridged networking and the upgrade blew that up on all VMs. Even selecting NAT I had to do some port forwarding to get it to work.

Is there even a product key to save when upgrading to Win10?

All I know is that some sort of "hardware id" is uploaded to Microsoft during the upgrade so If you later do a fresh install just skip both prompts for a serial, and later when you go online Win10 activates itself.

I've not decided yet whether to upgrade my old 8.1 install or start fresh on 10. Currently dual-booting to play with things.

I used belarc to retrieve all my serials after upgrading to 10 and my windows key did indeed change.

Once you're done with the upgrade, this will get you the product key:

wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey

But is that unique? Can you actually install with that? Again, you just skip both prompts and Windows activates itself. No key necessary after you've done the free upgrade.

Correct, once it is upgraded and Microsoft has the association between the WIN7/8 key and the WIN10 created on the MS Authentication Server, it is set. That command will give you the product key, but there is no real use to it. You have to do the upgrade first.

Well, I'm starting to like Win10 less and less.

First, many of my programs were not put in the start menu when the OS was upgraded. Ok so I'll manually add them... nope, they won't pin to start, none of them. (Origins, steam, dropbox, Daz3D, GOG galaxy. None of them are going into my start menu or the tiles)

So I start reinstalling some stuff (because suddenly they decide they aren't going to start with windows as they should (like NVidia GeForce Experience, DropBox, etc.) but they still aren't added to the start menu.

On top of this, even though I've turned off UAC, everything still needs to be right-clicked and runas admin. (such as the dropbox installation.)

Now I'm also getting out of memory errors which completely screw up my system and cause me to have to reboot because it kills my video card drivers and such. No, this isn't a virus, it's large 3d scenes in Daz3D using 5+ Gigs of ram which I've had absolutely no issues with in Windows7. I'm thinking Windows 10 doesn't know how to use virtual ram properly even though my system has 16GB + another 32GB set for virtual

It's just slowly becoming a bigger hassle than it may be worth.

*edit*

Oh, I nearly forgot. My reset button no longer works for some odd reason.

What do you mean "start menu or the tiles"?
What's the difference between the two?

Well you have the App list that's supposed to list all your installed programs and then there's the tiles on the right when you first click the windows icon. (default has email, cortana, xbox live, pictures, groove, etc. almost like a quick favorite app list or something)

When you right click an app and choose "Pin to Start" then that app goes to the (initially unnamed) group of pinned apps (tiles area). Right?
Depending on how big you made tiles area you may need to scroll down to get to it.

No, they're not pinning at all. After looking for the article I found that told you were to go to check for reserved names (such as unwise, setup, etc.) that kept files from being pinned, I found another forum where people were having the same problem of apps not pinning and they fixed it by removing the apps and only sticking with 2 columns of tiles because as soon as they went to 3, they could no longer pin.

*edit*

Nope, that didn't work for me. I removed everything, tired right clicking and pinning, drag-drop, but the only tiles I can create on the start menu are the ones that are default.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm installing W10 on a clients laptop (upgrading from W7) so this is my first exposure to the new OS. So far so good on the install. I've had to replace the HDD for the board went out on it. Seeing how it is a clean build I decided to just upgrade to 10 before I install anything on the laptop.

edit:crap - spoke too soon. Windows 7 is not activated. I have to call to get it fixed for they say the key is invalid. It is the key on the bottom of the laptop. F me.
