jvanegmond
IPB forum is a poor Q&A tool when compared to SO. I strongly recommend its usage for AutoIt related questions. @OP, I am posting there under my real name. minxomat 1 github.com/jvanegmond

JohnOne
Although I get a lot of answers from stackoverflow and like the voting up of answers system, I'm not a great fan of it's format.I'd take IPB over it any day. @nitekram, to get rep, answer question on there within the bounds of it's rules. Administrators Jon Posted July 1, 2015 Administrators Share Posted July 1, 2015 (edited) When they ruined the Best Answer feature in IPB4 they replaced it with a Q&A forum type where everything is classed as a question and people upvote/downvote answers and all that. Which is ok in theory but it doesn't really work if you have discussion mixed in. I'll flick the Test Posting forum into that mode to demo the effect.Because this forum has no chat, here is a room at stackoverflow:http://chat.stackoverflow.com/rooms/82028/autoit-general-chatAnyone with a stackexchange ID can join and talk. IPB comes with a built in chat room, but it's only 5 users by default (pay for extra) - so I only had it enabled for Mods. But there is a free chatbox modification that is available - I think it sits in the sidebar/bottom of the front page as a widget. minxomat
Well, lets say a question is of very poor quality, then I like the community edit approach (any user can edit any post by any other user, higher rep users judge the quality of the edit and peer review it. A successful edit gains you rep and so on...)Downvoting is really just a way of marking pure stupid questions or answers that no possible edit can improve. It is a harsh approach, but a pure - discussion free - QA platform is harsh compared to a forum per se . Also this makes users invest effort and research in their question.@Jon I won't say "want", but I'm used to it. Until a server update crashed it, we (DE forum) had a kick-ass shoutbox with System, User-Bans, whispering etc. It was moderated by all groups ranking higher than users (PU (me), Mods, Admins). I often find myself opening the site just to look at new SB entries for fun or riddles. Of course there is always additional labour involved with moderating the box. Users spam, users push their threads etc. But it can work smoothly. So if you have the resources to do that, I'd say go for it I will answer every single PM, and you are free to ask anything anytime. Moderators JLogan3o13 Posted July 1, 2015 Moderators Share Posted July 1, 2015 I'm sure I'll sound stuffy, but I for one would vote to stay away from the Chat Room experience as Minx describes it above. It sounds like a lot more digital "noise" than we currently have on the forum. "Profanity is the last vestige of the feeble mind. Administrators Jon Posted July 1, 2015 Administrators Share Posted July 1, 2015 There's one at the bottom of the main page for testing.Maybe I dismissed the Q&A function too quickly. I might enable it for a while on the 3 support forums. Hmm, it's difficult to apply to an old forum because the votes change the order of replies. We'd have to setup new forums that used that from the start for it to make sense. minxomat and jaberwacky 2 Deployment Blog: https://www.autoitconsulting.com/site/blog/ SCCM SDK Programming: https://www.autoitconsulting.com/site/sccm-sdk/

minxomat
I agree that this is a bad idea here, because voting is not rep based. On SO you have to have 5x the rep you need to upvote in order to downvote. Prevents most idiotism. I will answer every single PM, and you are free to ask anything anytime. Administrators Jon Posted July 1, 2015 Administrators Share Posted July 1, 2015 You assume there is an option to turn off downvotes. There isn't I'm afraid. So that's two bugs with it so far. You can't remove your vote and you can't prevent downvotes.
