Tools Recommendation for making CHM files

Hello :bye:, I need some advice on tools for creating CHM Documentation (or Help File).

I am currently using these 2 tools:

1. HTML Help Workshop

2. Cute Editor for PHP running on local XAMPP installation to generate HTML Files :P

 

I really need some strong recommendation, I really wonder what The AutoIt Team uses to make wonderful help files :sorcerer:

P.S Don't recommend All in One creators like Help n Doc which require $$$

As Jos said. The build scripts are also available if you can find the doc sources zip file. This should be located in the beta directory for AutoIt versions.

You could also have a look at HelpnDoc, TheDcoder. The free version is fully functional (it just adds a text bar at the bottom of each page stating you used the free version). It's much easier to use than HTML Help Workshop,UI is basically modelled on Word. You can also generate a web version with sidebar TOC, which is kinda neat, plus several other output formats (Word doc, pdf, Epub book...). Another feature is that you can let it scan and list all dead links for easy fixing.

Consider the limitations of the CHM format very carefully before you decide you really need it. Even Microsoft is generally moving away from CHM (to HxS) so that should give you some indication on the technology. It really depends a lot on your requirements though.

If you have a small project and want to say some things about it, a language like markdown should be just fine. If you are creating an API, you might want something like xmldoc comments, though I'm not sure how you do that in other languages than C#. For a RESTful API, maybe something else entirely. CHM has its uses but its use case has been narrowing for a while.

@mLipok Yeah, The GUI's controls were not responding. I think the GUI's loop broke :P (Its like when you create a GUI without a while loop to listen for any messages)

Ok, so here is my new setup:

1. CKEditor with many plugins in local XAMPP installation for generating html

2. KEL CHM Editor for CHM Managment

3. HTML Help Workshop for compiling CHM files :)
