At its Build developer conference, Microsoft today announced the launch of Visual Studio Code, a lightweight cross-platform code editor for writing modern web and cloud applications that will run on OS X, Linux and Windows. The application is still officially in preview, but you can now download it here (if this link isn’t live yet, give it a few more minutes and then try again).

This is really interesting, I love the direction Microsoft are moving in.

That is awesome. Even the most basic installation of Visual Studio is way too big for what it really is - downloadwise. Now if they just improve their Integration to GH, SF or GC ...

I have been using it this evening and created myself a little module in the process. One thing I noticed is if I initialise a variable with a type, it automatically checks if I make a stupid mistake of assigning another datatype to the variable. Some people might hate this, but I think that's brilliant, especially as I don't need to add TS annotations.

age = ""; // Displays an error

So is this just an editor that can be used on multiple platforms, or can code created with it, run on multiple platforms?

If it's the prior, then I don't see the big deal, if it's the latter then ace.

I like the multiplatform thing. I use sublime text at the mo because it's nice to use the same editor in my dev environment and on my mac.

​Damn right you use Sublime Text ;)

I represented them for an award ceremony last year - because apparently I am (was?) the number 1 plugin contributor in the UK.
