tiw7001
Hi All,Can someone point me in the right direction to stop memory leakage.I have a gui with an embedded browser. When the program starts it's using about 21k of memory (according to the task manager). After it's been running a short while, it's up to about 40K and after 24hrs its over 1,000k.What are the most common causes of memory leakage? Where can I learn more about best practice to stop this? Many thanks, Tim

Iczer
if you have many currently unneeded/unused variables set them to 0 instead of "" as setting a variable to "" doesn't mean the memory is freedsame with any kind of recursion.also embedded browser can cache pages in memory - maybe you can do something with it.anyway, as long as size is not causing troubles you can ignore it. water
Thanks for this info Maybe this information should be added to the help file?To erase an array (maybe because it is a large global array and you want to free the memory), simply assign a single value to it:$aArray = 0This will free the array and convert it back to the single value of 0.I read this as: Any single value can be used. jchd
That's also completely new for me and I can recall numerous posts where the "ever growing memory size" issue would have been solved by this "feature".I just checked and found that re-assigning to Null will do as well. Null emphasizes that the variable doesn't contain a meaningful value any more. There are now thousands of occurences of such reassignments that need examination just in the standard UDFs ... jchd
Maybe that reassignment of a string variant to "" only causes the string length to be set to zero, without changing the allocated memory block. Unlike strings, an integer variant doesn't need variable-size memory allocation and the value is probably self contained in the object (guess work).Anyway I consider this to be important enough to deserve a very clear note in help, even a warning. Administrators Jon Posted May 10, 2015 Administrators Share Posted May 10, 2015 (edited) There's no concept of sooner. There is no garbage collector or anything. Generally strings start with a little space to grow, and each time they reach the limit they are doubled in size to allow more room to grow. This is so operations like adding a single char onto the end of a string in a loop don't have to keep reallocating the memory. But when you assign an empty string or a few chars back to a string that was 10MB, it still stays as 10MB. I was tempted to release and realloc the memory in cases like this but when I was profiling the code it was always way faster to not. If a variable has got "large" it would usually become so again, so you'd end up reallocating memory all over again anyway with all the performance penalties.I'll have to check the code to see if I released the string memory when changing types.Edit: Yeah, the string memory is totally deleted on changing type.
