autoit-v3.3.13.19: why should this be a problem?

    return [4, 1, 2, 3, 4]
endfunc
msgbox(0,"",x()[0])

If you want to return an array you need to declare it - writing a row of values in square brackets does not of itself declare an array:

Func x()
    Local $aArray[] = [4, 1, 2, 3, 4] ; Declare the array
    Return $aArray                    ; Return the array
EndFunc   ;==>x

MsgBox(0, "", x()[0])

Do it in two steps. First define the array and set the data then use the arrayname as parameter for Return.
