Strange arraysort

Hello,

I want to sort numbers in an array.

for example :

#include <array.au3>
local $array[4] = ["14","23","3","2.50"]
_ArraySort($array)
_ArrayDisplay($array)

The result is 

14

2.50

23

3

Is it normal ?

Is there a way to have the correct sort ?

2.50

You are sorting string, not numbers. Hence you get lexicographic order, not numerical order.

Like jchd said, you should convert it to number first before sorting. Something like this:

#include <array.au3>
local $array[4] = ["14","23","3","2.50"]
For $a = 0 to Ubound($array)-1
    $array[$a] = Number($array[$a])
Next
_ArraySort($array)
_ArrayDisplay($array)

That result is quite normal - the items are being sorted as ASCII strings because that is how you have stored them.

Store them as numbers and you get the result you were expecting:

#include <Array.au3>

Local $array[4] = ["14", "23", "3", "2.50"] ; Strings
_ArraySort($array)
_ArrayDisplay($array) ; Sorted as strings

Local $array[4] = [14, 23, 3, 2.50] ; Numbers
_ArraySort($array)
_ArrayDisplay($array) ; Sorted as numbers

All clear?

It must be something like :

And i would like to have :

And so you completely waste the time of the 3 people who responded because you cannot be bothered to provide all the necessary information - bravo!

So now let us ask a few more questions so that we do not waste any more:

- 1. Will the prefix always be "A" or can it change?

- 2a. If it is always "A" why bother to store it in the array if you know you want to sort the suffix values numerically? Just add it when you extract the values.

- 2b. If it is not always "A" how do you want the items sorted in respect of the prefix value?

And, of course, anything else you can think of that might help us.

Have a look at _ArrayNaturalSort() by wraithdu - it's always proven robust for me (rather useful for keeping filenames in the appropriate order).  It's not the fastest thing (especially on larger 2D arrays, which is to be expected), but it works.

Just kidding.  

The prefix can change.

The idea is to sort in first the text and after the number

Example :

A 1

A 2.5

A 14

A 23

AB 3

B 4.5

C 2

...

In that case I would use my _ArrayMultiColSort UDF and do this:

#include "ArrayMultiColSort.au3"

Global $aArray[7][2] = [ _
                    ["A", 14], _
                    ["AB", 3], _
                    ["C", 2], _
                    ["B", 4.5], _
                    ["A", 23], _
                    ["A", 2.5], _
                    ["A", 1]]

_ArrayDisplay($aArray, "Original", Default, 8)

Global $aSortData[2][2] = [[0, 0], [1, 0]] ; Sort both columns in ascending order

_ArrayMultiColSort($aArray, $aSortData)

_ArrayDisplay($aArray, "Sorted", Default, 8)

Now you have everything sorted as you wish.
