RegExp - Local inside While...Wend Loop

I want to do a RegExp for finding string (( single line ) with Local directive used inside While Wend loop.

Here is what I get:

TEST SCRIPT:

Func _test1()
    Local $sTest1 = ''
    While 1
;~      ....
;~      ....
        While 1
;~          ....
            Local $sTest2 = ''
;~          ....
;~          ....
        WEnd
;~      ....
    WEnd
EndFunc   ;==>_test1

REGEXP:

(?is)(While.*?)(Local\V*)(?:.*?)(?=Wend)

I have two problems with that REGEXP

QUESTION 1:

Why using that:

(?is)(While.*?)(?:Local\V*)(?:.*?)(?=Wend)

I have 2 groups with a duplicate text "While"

Because I use that group definition (While.*?) I am puzzled why the output of the definition of the group gives me twice the text "While" ?

Q1 is easy: apply the regexp to this slightly modified input and I'm sure the light will shed.

The code uses K which allows to reset the start of match at the current point and 'forget' that was matched before

when I use (While.*?) for definition to the first grup I remeber this description

0 or more, lazy

and I assumed that I would receive the smallest possible string

starting with the keyword 'While'

and ending before the keyword "Local"

When running, your regex first finds 'While 1', then  .*?  grabs anything until the limit (the word Local) is reached, "anything" means all characters between "While 1" and "Local" and this includes the "While 2"

from AutoIt 3.3.8.1 HelpFile:

? (after a repeating character)

Find the smallest match instead of the largest.

"

So I would not have any questions I used such an expression:

(While.*) 

 

but I use this:

(While.*?) 

and there has just do not get it

In this case you are confusing about laziness, think of how the regex engine operates
First it finds 'While 1', then it "finds the smallest match" until 'Local'

For your goal the best way would have been to use a lookbehind, but as undefinite quantifiers are not allowed in these assertions the only remaining way is to use K
In the helpfile jchd wrote : Action of K is similar but not identical to a look-behind, in that K can work on alternations of varying lengths.

This is exactly what the regex engine does as soon as it finds 'While 1' which is the first While found from the beginning of the text

My rather laconic answer wasn't intended to put you down. Indeed and as mikell just expressed, laziness is irrelevant in this case.

Looking from an abstract point of view, you request two literal matches (while and local) and a "lazy" catchall in between. That the catchall is lazy or not makes absolutely no difference, since it must be extended so that "local" matches.

I am doing script analyzer.

 

Although this task may seem ridiculous, it is a very good job of learning.

Or maybe this will be an additional benefit in the form of a script in the "Example Scirpts"

I have some old scripts, the number of errors occurring in them is staggering.

So I wanted to automate some amendments.

 

So I am in the process of development .....

I guess you will discover soon that there are always some exceptions or particular cases that regex cannot solve

The code I posted above is an answer to the precise question you asked, but if the text to treat is like this one below, it no longer works (for #5 and #6) and I can't imagine how to proceed

If you are doing an analyzer, which results in a report, I assume that the processing of a report, the hand of man.

After processing (removing errors) must perform the second check.

In this case, the removal of the first repro reveal the second.
