It's quite simple really, and there are many many ways it can happen. You click a link from a search engine result for example and start reading a thread, you then reply to it without looking at the dates.

As to the why, I'd always bet on bumping post count. Others may want to find a way to "contribute" to the community by answering instead of always asking questions, but aren't sure how.

Either way I say a forced reformat of Windows for posting in any topic over a year old is more than suitable
