I was thinking of adding file signatures to some of the files I create with some programs I have made. I thought I'd ask if anyone has any advice about this. Clearly it is better to avoid duplicating an existing signature. Are there any online resources or advice anyone can recommend? Thanks.

I'm not sure how that relates. I mean a file signature (magic numbers). An unmistakable ID tag in the binary of files generated by an application.

Is there any particular binary sequence I need to avoid for some reason?

You shouldn't complicate file header. Data there should be absolute minimum needed for identification, or better said verification (considering you write for Windows) of the format.

Look for PNG file format specification to see what modern and completely forward compatible file format looks like.

Avoid formats of for example, doc files (Yashied). That's from some old passed times.

On Windows all you really need is file extension.

It makes sense to add a signature if the wrong file structure can lead to serious problems, such as crash of your program.

Thanks Yashied. I doubt it will crash my own program, but perhaps someone else's software won't like it. I think file signatures are generally a good idea. I believe I can also use any non ascii character at the start to achieve the same results as above.

I don't quite understand how this determines anything.

Finally I understand this statement. I would have worded it slightly differently. Setting the high bit enables the computer to determine a transmissions system's limitations immediately - that much I understand. I suppose the data can always be transmitted bit by bit.

I advise you to use a 4-byte signature. The codes can be completely arbitrary, for example the initials of your name. If you want to make an unique signature, you can check with this list.
