Well, a quick test of a color image produces the kind of histogram I would expect.

Unfortunately, my original test page is a JPG that's 3.4MB ... far more than what I can add to my forum allotment.

@qwert: the issue is the display of each of the 256 color values. With this image the index 256 has a value of ~6.78 million whereas the rest of the values much smaller and thus the display looks like this.

Obviously, I have a lot to learn about histograms. My eye sees a lot of mid-level grays in that image, so I was expecting spikes to occur in the mid portion of the graph.

Thanks for explaining what you have. I'll try other images and hone my understanding. And, BTW, as a test, I submitted that image to another program and got the same graph as your script gets ... so this case is closed! Thanks.
