I have an idea for an AutoIt feature or more probably syntactical sugar. I'd like to return an array from a function like this: 

Global $my_array = return_array()

Func return_array()
  Return [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
EndFunc
Will that make a good feature to request? I did some searching but I don't know what this feature would be named so I hope I didn't miss any prior discussions.

Click on the BugTracker link at the top of the forum pages, and then go to Feature Requests and request the feature there.

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

I have rejected similar request some time ago. Btw, that's called array literal.

Array literal is used for array initialization during declaration. Adding it to the language in this manner would mean adding exception in processing of (at least) Return keyword. The other option of implementation would be even worst because it would mean effectively recognizing literals as variables, if for nothing then because something like this could be considered as reasonable request:

Global $my_array = return_array()
Func return_array()
  Return [1, 2, 3, [8, 9, 10], 5][3]
EndFunc

One other developer was reserved if it would make you feel better. Still I would reject it any time - and again.

you can also can use

Func GetArray()
Return _ArrayCreate(1, 2, 3, 4, 5)

anyway, I agree with your idea, a programming language should be flexible as possible.

I think it would be good to make a topic in which everyone present their ideas for the future of AutoIT (maybe AutoIt4)

Click on the BugTracker link at the top of the forum pages, and then go to Feature Requests and request the feature there.

I recall reading somewhere that it was preferred to discuss bug reports and feature requests in the forum first.

Bug reports I can understand, because usually they're not really bugs, but feature requests it doesn't make sense to discuss here first unless you've searched and seen similar suggestions.

I mean, that's why there's a feature request section on the bug tracker, at least IMHO that would be the place to do them.

Could disappear at the click of a button (any MVP could do it).

I doubt anyone clicking a button is going to remove a function from a version of AutoIt I already have installed.

Any function at any time can be removed from AutoIt, I don't see why one which is no longer documented should be any different.

Deprecation.

The functionality is going to be shortly removed from AutoIt, which is why it's no longer documented. Within the next release or so it'll be gone and you'll sit and wonder why your code isn't working.

I know what would happen, any non compiled code I have which uses such functions will need to be updated (if using a version of AutoIt without it), nothing more. Edited by JohnOne
