It cannot - you need to declare the array with at least one element ([0]) first. Then you can use _ArrayAdd to add further elements. Similarly, using _ArrayDelete on the [0] element destroys the array - as explained in the Help file.

I usually declare arrays that will vary a lot in size with a count in the [0] element and so the problem never arises.

I have the same approach as Melba23, but reserving the 0th index for the total number of elements in the array. Of course you can use UBound() to obtain this information at a later stage.

I would say that it depends entirely on what you are doing with arrays. I tend to only use the first element as a count if it happens to be convenient. Sometimes you know exactly how many elements there are in your array and it may be unecessary or inconvenient for some specific reason. It's best to be familiar with both methods since there are so many examples that combine the two approaches.

I agree with czardas. My comment referred to the times where you are constantly adding/deleting elements using _ArrayAdd/Delete. If the array is a fixed size then there is absolutely no need to use the [0] element as a count.

If I have a fixed array I've recently started to use this approach with using Enum, thus eliminating the need for using 'magic numbers.'

Local Enum $sLabelName, $hGUI, $iLabelID, $iGUIMax ; Use Enum to create variables from 0 to total number of variables.
Local $aGUI[$iGUIMax] ; $iGUIMax is equal to the value of 3.

$aGUI[$sLabelName] = 'This is a label.'
$aGUI[$hGUI] = GUICreate(...
$aGUI[$iLabelID] = GUICtrlCreateLabel(...
