Updated the UDF. Now the return values are either True/False and not 1/0 as before. I also updated the examples by removing 4096 (magic number) and opting for $MB_SYSTEMMODAL. This can be found in the Constants.au3 file.

LockFile allows you to lock a file to the current process. This is useful if you want to interact with a specific file but wish to avoid the accidental deletion by another process or worse still a use

If you leave enough time for the caretaker to consolidate all files (without interference), I see no reason why not.

A slight script breaking change in which I have added an underscore after Lock in the function names e.g. LockErase() >> Lock_Erase(). See first post for updated UDF and download.

And a very controversial function Lock_Read. Why BinaryToString? It`s return ansi by default. It is better to have settings for this or return unicode -> BinaryToString(..., 2)

Thank you for this awsome UDF. It is perfect for synchronising access to the same file from scripts running on severel PCs!

I just have one question: What happens if a process locks a file and then crashes before the LockUnlock() was executed?

Would the file be locked indefinitely, since the process it is locked to does not exist anymore and cannot unlock it?

Or would the file be automatically unlocked with the end of the process?

And if the file keeps being locked, is there anyway to forcefully unlock it from a different process?

Would be great to here from you, thanks in advance.

@guinness I'm curious about the Lock_Reduce function.  What are some example applications?  I'm having trouble thinking of any since it appears to just cut off the file at whatever point the percentage passed is (in terms of bytes).  I'm also having trouble understanding how it fits with the rest of the UDF.

@guinness How can I make this work on a file in OneDrive? I have 2 computers which competitively try to write something in the same file shared on Windows OneDrive. Very often one of them fails and the Windows throws an error message saying that they could not merge the changes and so they created another copy. FYI, Files On-Demand feature is disabled on both computers. Below is my reproducer and its result. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

@CYCho One solution would be to give each computers a time sharing space.  For example comp1 can make change to the file between 0-29 secs of each minute, while comp2 can make change between 30-59 secs.  Not the greatest solution but it sure would work.  Of course you could reduce the time to like every 10 secs or every 5 secs.

Very creative idea. Thank you for your attention. I think I found a solution. Each computer will write in a separate file of a predefined name, wait for 5 seconds, one of them will combine the data into one file for share with others. It seems to work in my testing environment where 5 computers are involved.

@Nine Let me explain what I'm trying to achieve. Several of my friends share a folder on my OneDrive where I have my code. Each of these computers will have a task scheduled to run my code at a certain time of the day if it is on-line. My code needs to know which computers are on-line to determine how the workload is to be divided among the computers, and this is where I hoped Lock_File UDF could be used. At the beginning of the code, each computer will update a file bearing its own name, most probably within a couple of seconds after the scheduled time. Five seconds later, all of them will perform FileGetTime() for all these files and, if the last update time of a file is within 10 seconds from current time, we know that that computer has checked in. Using a predetermined order of the computer pool, one of the on-line computers will act as a caretaker and will perform the last-minute chore of consolidating the outputs produced by participating computers. Does this sound achievable?
