Open a .chm file with a specific topic?

Hi,

is it possible to let an autoit script open a .chm (help) file and automatically jump to a specific entry in the table of contents?

E.g.: The Autoit Scite editor can open the autoit .chm help file when you hit F1 on a keyword. I'd like to achieve the same from a

normal autoit script.

You're welcome, just right-click on the page in the chm file and select 'Properties' and this will show you the location i.e. change /SciTEJump_Doc.htm to whatever it tells you there.

Unfortunately, most of the help files I tried so far behave a bit differently.

E.g.: 

Run('"' & @WindowsDir & 'hh.exe" "' & $sHelpPath & 'Scite4AutoIt3.chm::/Scite_instructions.htm#run"'

displays the appropriate entry but doesn't unfold the parent entry "SciTE/AutoIt3 - Getting started" + path.

Some other help files don't open in the content tab of the help but in the index one instead.

Ofc this is not the fault of autoit :oops:

There is one thing left, that bothers me. Every time I call a .chm file with a specific topic, I'll get a new instance of that help file regardless if the last one is still open.

Can this be avoided?

If you look in your task manager you'll notice an executable called AutoIt3Help.exe which is basically (from what I can gather) checking if the CHM file is running and brings it to the front if it is, so the CHM is executed by running this executable so this is an idea of what you could do OR use HotKeySet to map the F1 key to a function and then set a flag or check if the CHM window exists. (Just an idea!)

There was a free utility called KeyHH.exe but it seems that download links point to the page, but the company that published it no longer offers it. If you can find KeyHHSetup.exe you may be in luck. I found it after about a 2 hour search. But now I forget where I got it. Maybe one of those old software archives.

When I first got on Vista MS took away .hlp file functionality, so I found KeyHH. Works with .hlp and .chm. But once MS provided the help file viewer for .hlp I lost track of the need to use KeyHH. I think for awhile too I was using it to respond to F1 key press for Delphi programs without doing the whole help provider bit. Just luanched KeyHH with the .chm or .hlp file name and the key to search. I don't have it installed currently so please don't ask me for usage info.

It's part of RJ_TextEd portable zip. Seems to have the exe and a readme. Don't know if it's any better than doing it via script as shown above. But it's also supposed to work with .hlp.

I personally wouldn't use that file as you're guaranteed that most won't have it installed on their system but they will have hh.exe, well from Windows 98 and above.

Correct, but there are still a couple of points you should be concerned with, can you redistribute the product in a stripped down form and is this a standalone product or would it have to be installed? I for one am not fond of applications installing (unnecessary) 3rd party applications when I'm not presented with an option to opt out.

It's (atm) only for my personal use but If I have to hand it out to anybody else, it would be only the compiled file. I personally hate software that must be installed :bye: I wrote a simple Google Chrome portable start wrapper that makes use of the FileInstall command (to include 7za.exe) to extract all the files that are downloaded and it works beautifully on every system so far (and I tried everything up from WinXP x86/64).

It seems I got a very old keyhh version from the wayback site. It didn't run on a x64 platform..

Thanks Eclectician, just downloaded the .zip file and the keyhh.exe that's in the archive starts without any errors under Win7 x64 :oops:

I'll test it tomorrow to see if it makes any sense to use it instead of hh.
