GUI Loop Problem - Can't exit idle loop [solved]

Hello all. I've searched the forums and found various posts from people with similar problems, but nothing which applied to my specific situation and unfortunately none of the solutions could be derived into a working fix for my problem, hence posting. So my sincerest apologies if this has already been answered elsewhere.

Basically, I need the ability to create a GUI, wait for input, then hide the GUI and return to that GUI if the original input proves to be invalid by some separate logic (basically the input is used to call another process, so I have to wait to see what that process returns before I know whether the input is valid, there's no way to validate it in the script).

My original script is far too convoluted to post here, so I've reduced it down to the basic issue and created an example of my problem, but with a much simpler (not very functional) script - but it demonstrates my problem well. Here's the example code:

#Include <GUIConstantsEx.au3>
Opt("GUIOnEventMode", 1)

CreateGUIFunction()
ShowGUIFunction()

; Create the GUI
Func CreateGUIFunction()
    $GUI = GUICreate("Example GUI", 230, 50)
    $RightButton = GUICtrlCreateButton("Right Button", 10, 10, 100, 30)
    GUICtrlSetOnEvent($RightButton, "RightFunction")
    $WrongButton = GUICtrlCreateButton("Wrong Button", 120, 10, 100, 30)
    GUICtrlSetOnEvent($WrongButton, "WrongFunction")
    GUISetOnEvent($GUI_EVENT_CLOSE, "Terminate")
EndFunc

Func ShowGUIFunction()
    Global $StopIdling = 0
    GUISetState(@SW_SHOW)
    Do
        Sleep(100)
    Until $StopIdling = 1
EndFunc

Func RightFunction()
    Global $StopIdling = 1
    GUISetState(@SW_HIDE)
    MsgBox(0, @ScriptName, "You clicked the RIGHT button.  Exiting....")
    Terminate()
EndFunc

Func WrongFunction()
    Global $StopIdling = 1
    GUISetState(@SW_HIDE)
    MsgBox(0, @ScriptName, "You clicked the WRONG button.  Returning to GUI...")
    ShowGUIFunction()
EndFunc

Func Terminate()
    Exit 0
EndFunc

The problems lies in the "Wrong" input returning to the GUI, but because it's still stuck in the loop from the ShowGUI function, none of the controls respond. I originally had it idling in a While 1 WEnd loop but changed it to a Do Until in an attempt to fix it, but alas this made no difference.

Any ideas?

Try it this way. Only put an idle loop OUTSIDE of any function because you're blocking the OnEvent triggers until the functions exit.

#Include <GUIConstantsEx.au3>
Opt("GUIOnEventMode", 1)
;~ Global $GUI
CreateGUIFunction()
ShowGUIFunction()
While 1
    Sleep(10)
WEnd

; Create the GUI
Func CreateGUIFunction()
    $GUI = GUICreate("Example GUI", 230, 50)
    $RightButton = GUICtrlCreateButton("Right Button", 10, 10, 100, 30)
    GUICtrlSetOnEvent($RightButton, "RightFunction")
    $WrongButton = GUICtrlCreateButton("Wrong Button", 120, 10, 100, 30)
    GUICtrlSetOnEvent($WrongButton, "WrongFunction")
    GUISetOnEvent($GUI_EVENT_CLOSE, "Terminate")
EndFunc

Func ShowGUIFunction()
    Global $StopIdling = 0
    GUISetState(@SW_SHOW)
    WinActivate($GUI)
;~     Do
;~         Sleep(100)
;~     Until $StopIdling = 1
EndFunc

Func RightFunction()
    Global $StopIdling = 1
    GUISetState(@SW_HIDE)
    MsgBox(0, @ScriptName, "You clicked the RIGHT button.  Exiting....")
    Terminate()
EndFunc

Func WrongFunction()
    Global $StopIdling = 1
    GUISetState(@SW_HIDE)
    MsgBox(0, @ScriptName, "You clicked the WRONG button.  Returning to GUI...")
    ShowGUIFunction()
EndFunc

Func Terminate()
    Exit 0
EndFunc

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

Valiante,

Return to a loop in the main code - looping in a function blocks all other OnEvent functions from running: :)

#Include <guiconstantsex.au3>

Opt("GUIOnEventMode", 1)

CreateGUIFunction()

While 1
    Sleep(10)
WEnd

; Create the GUI
Func CreateGUIFunction()
    $GUI = GUICreate("Example GUI", 230, 50)
    GUISetOnEvent($GUI_EVENT_CLOSE, "Terminate")
    $RightButton = GUICtrlCreateButton("Right Button", 10, 10, 100, 30)
    GUICtrlSetOnEvent($RightButton, "RightFunction")
    $WrongButton = GUICtrlCreateButton("Wrong Button", 120, 10, 100, 30)
    GUICtrlSetOnEvent($WrongButton, "WrongFunction")
    GUISetState()
EndFunc

Func RightFunction()
    GUISetState(@SW_HIDE)
    MsgBox(0, @ScriptName, "You clicked the RIGHT button.  Exiting....")
    Terminate()
EndFunc

Func WrongFunction()
    GUISetState(@SW_HIDE)
    MsgBox(0, @ScriptName, "You clicked the WRONG button.  Returning to GUI...")
    GUISetState(@SW_SHOW)
EndFunc

Func Terminate()
    Exit 0
EndFunc

Edit: This "New post added" functionality is about as useful as a chocolate fireguard - not that any of you youngsters know what a fireguard is ! ;)

Thanks for your replies. Unfortunately, for various reasons, it needs to remain inside the function.

In the meantime, I've been reading the Windows Message Handler tutorial and it's solved my problem!

See working code below, in case anyone else needs a loop inside a function, but the ability to interrupt said function...

#Include <GUIConstantsEx.au3>
#include <WindowsConstants.au3>
Opt("GUIOnEventMode", 1)
$StopIdling = 0

GUIRegisterMsg($WM_COMMAND, "_WM_COMMAND")

CreateGUIFunction()
ShowGUIFunction()

Func CreateGUIFunction()
    $GUI = GUICreate("Example GUI", 230, 50)
    Global $RightButton = GUICtrlCreateButton("Right Button", 10, 10, 100, 30)
    GUICtrlSetOnEvent($RightButton, "RightFunction")
    Global $WrongButton = GUICtrlCreateButton("Wrong Button", 120, 10, 100, 30)
    GUICtrlSetOnEvent($WrongButton, "WrongFunction")
    GUISetOnEvent($GUI_EVENT_CLOSE, "Terminate")
EndFunc

Func _WM_COMMAND($hWnd, $Msg, $wParam, $lParam)
    If BitAND($wParam, 0x0000FFFF) = $RightButton Then $StopIdling = 1
    If BitAND($wParam, 0x0000FFFF) = $WrongButton Then $StopIdling = 1
    Return $GUI_RUNDEFMSG
EndFunc

Func ShowGUIFunction()
    $StopIdling = 0
    GUISetState(@SW_SHOW)
    Do
        Sleep(100)
    Until $StopIdling = 1
EndFunc

Func RightFunction()
    GUISetState(@SW_HIDE)
    MsgBox(0, @ScriptName, "You clicked the RIGHT button.  Exiting....")
    Terminate()
EndFunc

Func WrongFunction()
    GUISetState(@SW_HIDE)
    MsgBox(0, @ScriptName, "You clicked the WRONG button.  Returning to GUI...")
    ShowGUIFunction()
EndFunc

Func Terminate()
    Exit 0
EndFunc

Valiante,

Well as I wrote the tutorial, I am glad I was able to help you in the end. :)
