Could bring up again the issue of adding _ArrayDisplay back into the Debug UDF a UDF I haven't seen used a whole lot.

Was it discussed before?

Back in 2007 there was a discussion of where to put _ArrayDisplay, I've read a few of the old threads. :)

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

I use the Array UDF very sparingly myself, but it does include an excellent set of functions for beginners to learn the basics. I see this as an asset to the language.

Have a look at Array UDF and you will see Const ByRef or ByRef Const (doesn't matter) is used with those functions that don't change the array. I fixed _ArrayCombinations, but left _ArrayPermute because this is passed to the internal function __Array_ExeterInternal which uses ByRef and not Const ByRef and thus would result in failure.

Yes and no, depends if __IsArray were to be used in a function that only had ByRef. But upon further discovery it appears __Array_ExeterInternal is only used in _ArrayPermute. Hmm, interesting.

__Array_ExeterInternal does nothing to the original array and it should be possible to use ByRef Const with __Array_ExeterInternal in all situations. I haven't tested this though.

^^ That's true. And just by the way, I remember Valik. He PM-ed me and then he died.

In AutoIt if parameter is changed then you do Byref Param. If not however, then you do Const Byref Param or just Param.

Byref for parameter that will not be changed is the worst solution, try to avoid that as it will create subtle bugs and unnecessary confusion (as seen here).

This goes for objects too. Byref ObjectParam doesn't make much sense considering AutoIt always works with (object) pointers and copying object to another variable (variant) doesn't call copy constructor on object, it increments reference count on existing object. Byref-ed object will cause AutoIt to create reference type Variant referencing object Variant - not object. To get object (pointer) from ref Variant AutoIt will have to do at least step more therefore.

Now open IE.au3 and see how many times Byref ObjectParam is done.

You should see some of the Array.au3 functions if you want to see ByRef gone wild.

Except for the $avArray parameter, none of those variables are changed during the execution of the function, yet they're all set using byref.

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

Arrays are copy on write only so if you don't modify them, it doesn't copy them. At least, that is what Valik said in the past.

Though I presume not large strings for example?
