The window title has changed since Windows XP, so if you're using Vista/7 it won't work.

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

gds,

Welcome to the AutoIt forum. :D

MS have changed the names of the NotePad dialogs since the tutorial was written - so you are waiting for a non-existent window to appear

if you adjust the code to read like this it will work:

Run("notepad.exe")
WinWaitActive("Untitled - Notepad")
Send("This is some text.")
WinClose("Untitled - Notepad")
WinWaitActive("Notepad", "")
Send("!n")

The next release changes the tutorial to reflect this.

code:

Run("notepad.exe")

WinWaitActive("Untitled - Notepad")

Send("This is some text.")

WinClose("Untitled - Notepad")

WinWaitActive("Notepad", "Do you want to save")

Send("!n")

Exit

seeing that the dialog box message had changed I tried

Run("notepad.exe")

WinWaitActive("Untitled - Notepad")

Send("This is some text.")

WinClose("Untitled - Notepad")

WinWaitActive("Notepad", "Do you want to save changes to Untitled?")

Send("!n")

Exit

the send("!n") is to give the don't save button press

can anyone suggest how I could test to see if the Alt+n is being sent?

Try this instead:

WinWaitActive("Notepad", "Do&n't Save")

Works for me, the text you're looking for doesn't appear in that dialog box, at least not to AutoIt, so it will never send the Alt-N.
