czardas,

to go up one level from the starting directory

I am not sure I understand what you mean by that as a recursive search is essentially down into the folder tree. Why not start in the folder above if that is what you want?

BrewManNH,

Thanks for that. I have some working code - standby for a Beta when I have done some more testing. ;)

Not for me personally, but yes you could go in, or out, until the path runs out. For example: say you want to find all folders 3 levels up and search inside them on a second run. You may prefer to start with a relative path, which may also change frequently on an external drive. It's the same as going up one level in a File Save dialogue.

You could always use something like "......" as the starting folder and search down 3.

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.

Exactly this. I guess the additional functionality is not really needed.  It was just a thought - never mind me.

Edit

Although the more I think about it the more I see there may be potential use for it, depending on how it  is implemented. If you are grabbing filtered items on the way out, you will get a different set of results than if you were searching inwards starting at the root directory - the trunk of the tree without the branches. I'm not sure why you would need this though. I hope it made sense. :ermm:

Hi,

Here is some Beta code for people to play with. It uses the new logic as set out earlier:

; Example code ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

#include <Array.au3>

Global $sAutoItDir = StringLeft(@AutoItExe, StringInStr(@AutoItExe, "\", Default, -1))
If StringRight($sAutoItDir, 5) == "beta\" Then
    $sAutoItDir = StringTrimRight($sAutoItDir, 5)
EndIf
ConsoleWrite($sAutoItDir & @CRLF)

; All files and folders
$aArray = _RecFileListToArray($sAutoItDir, "*|", 0, 1, 1)
_ArrayDisplay($aArray)

; Ignore the "Icons" folder
$aArray = _RecFileListToArray($sAutoItDir, "*||ic*", 0, 1, 1)
_ArrayDisplay($aArray)

; Look for icon files - but exlude the "Icons" folder - I get 1 in "SciTE\cSnippet"
$aArray = _RecFileListToArray($sAutoItDir, "*.ico||ic*", 1, 1, 1)
If @error Then
MsgBox(0, "Ooops!", "No ico files found")
Else
    _ArrayDisplay($aArray)
EndIf

; And it is ignored when looking for folders - "Include" should still be there
$aArray = _RecFileListToArray($sAutoItDir, "*|ic*|i*", 2, 1, 1)
_ArrayDisplay($aArray)

; Parameters ....: $sPath - Initial path used to generate filelist
;                               If path ends in \ then folders will be returned with an ending \
;                               If path lengths > 260 chars, prefix path with "\\?\" - return paths are not affected
;                  $sMask - Optional: Filter for result. Multiple filters must be separated by ";"
;                           Use "|" to separate 3 possible sets of filters: "Include|Exclude|Exclude_Folders"
;                               Include = Files/Folders to include (default = "*" [all])
;                               Exclude = Files/Folders to exclude (default = "" [none])
;                               Exclude_Folders = only used if basic $iReturn = 0 AND $iRecur = 1 to exclude defined folders (default = "" [none])
;                  $iReturn - Optional: specifies whether to return files, folders or both and omits those with certain attributes
;                              0 - Return both files and folders (Default)
;                                   If non-recursive Include/Exclude_List applies to files and folders
;                                   If recursive Include/Exclude_List applies to files only, all folders are searched unless excluded using $sExclude_List_Folder
;                              1 - Return files only    - Include/Exclude_List applies to files only, all folders searched if recursive
;                              2 - Return folders only  - Include/Exclude_List applies to folders only for searching and return
;                                   Add one or more of the following to $iReturn to omit files/folders with that attribute
;                                   + 4  - Hidden files and folders
;                                   + 8  - System files and folders
;                                   + 16 - Link/junction folders
;                                   Note:  Omitting files/folders uses a different search algorithm and takes approx 50% longer
;                  $iRecur - Optional: specifies whether to search recursively in subfolders and to what level
;                             1 - Search in all subfolders (unlimited recursion)
;                             0 - Do not search in subfolders (Default)
;                             Negative integer - Search in subfolders to specified depth
;                  $iSort - Optional: sort ordered in alphabetical and depth order
;                             0 - Not sorted (Default)
;                             1 - Sorted
;                             2 - Sorted with faster algorithm (assumes files sorted within each folder - requires NTFS drive)
;                  $iReturnPath - Optional: specifies displayed path of results
;                             0 - File/folder name only
;                             1 - Relative to initial path (Default)
;                             2 - Full path included
;
; [These parameters are now deprecated as they should be included within the $sMask parameter]
; [If $sMask contains sections for Exclude and Exclude_Folders (i.e "|" characters are used) then these parameters will be ignored]
;                  $sExclude_List - Optional: filter for excluded results (default ""). Multiple filters must be separated by ";"
;                  $sExclude_List_Folder - Optional: only used if $iReturn = 0 AND $iRecur = 1 to exclude folders matching the filter
;
; Requirement(s).: v3.3.1.1 or higher
; Return values .: Success: One-dimensional array made up as follows:
;                            [0] = Number of Files\Folders returned
;                            [1] = 1st File\Folder
;                            [2] = 2nd File\Folder
;                            ...
;                            [n] = nth File\Folder

New Version - 3 Jul 2013

Changed: The logic for the for excluding folders from the search path. The new code acts like this:

$iReturn Mode           Include_List    Exclude_List    Exclude_Folder_List     Comment
applies to      applies to      applies to

$iRecur = 0                                                                     Non-recursive search acts as _FileListToArray

0 (Files + Folders)     Files+Folders   Files+Folders   Ignored

1 (Files only)          Files only      Files only      Ignored

2 (Folders only)        Folders only    Folders only    Ignored

$iRecur <> 0

0 (Files + Folders)     Files only      Files only      Folders only            Searches and returns all folders unless excluded

1 (Files only)          Files only      Files only      Folders only            Searches all folders unless excluded

2 (Folders only)        Folders only    Folders only    Ignored                 Searches and returns all folders unless excluded
The change is when searching recursively for files only. Previously the Exclude_Folder_List parameter was ignored and all folders were searched - in the new logic it becomes active and the specified folders (and any subfolders) are not searched. The change to the folder-only searching case is just in the text of the previously rather unclear comment - the behaviour of the UDF is unchanged.

As the parameter was ignored before, this change should be non-scriptbreaking - current scripts will see no difference.

New UDF, example and zip in first post. :)

Hi,

If you want to continue the argument about the UDF being taken into File.au3, I have split the relevant posts into a new topic here. :)

continyu,

No - and adding one would essentially double the time taken (which is already long enough on big paths) in order to count the files before then checking to see if they match. :(

Personally I use a marquee progress to show that something is happening while the function is running. ;)

your UDF is very important!
But it turns out that i need a new requirement.

I need set time limit
for the function.

for example in this case:

$test = _RecFileListToArray("D:\", "*.exe", 1, 1, 0, 0)

This function processes the output too much time.

i want that after X seconds, the function will stop to processes the output and will return the unfinished output.

Thank you very much!

gil900,

What is the point of this request? Why on earth would you want an unfinished listing?

gil900,

What is the point of this request? Why on earth would you want an unfinished listing?

M23

Because in my case it's better than freezing my software.

In addition, this case will happen only if my software used improperly.

gil900,

This should do what you want - read the header carefully to see how to set the timer limit: :)

; #FUNCTION# ====================================================================================================================
; Name...........: _RecFileListToArray
; Description ...: Lists files and\or folders in a specified path with optional recursion to defined level and result sorting
; Syntax.........: _RecFileListToArray($sPath[, $sMask = "*"[, $iReturn = 0[, $iRecur = 0[, $iSort = 0[, $iReturnPath = 1[, $sExclude_List = ""[, $sExclude_List_Folder]]]]]]])
; Parameters ....: $sPath - Initial path used to generate filelist
;                               If path ends in \ then folders will be returned with an ending \
;                               If path lengths > 260 chars, prefix path with "\\?\" - return paths are not affected
;                  $sMask - Optional: Filter for result. Multiple filters must be separated by ";"
;                           Use "|" to separate 3 possible sets of filters: "Include|Exclude|Exclude_Folders"
;                               Include = Files/Folders to include (default = "*" [all])
;                               Exclude = Files/Folders to exclude (default = "" [none])
;                               Exclude_Folders = only used if basic $iReturn = 0 AND $iRecur = 1 to exclude defined folders (default = "" [none])
;                  $iReturn - Optional: specifies whether to return files, folders or both and omits those with certain attributes
;                              0 - Return both files and folders (Default)
;                                   If non-recursive Include/Exclude_List applies to files and folders
;                                   If recursive Include/Exclude_List applies to files only, all folders are searched unless excluded using $sExclude_List_Folder
;                              1 - Return files only    - Include/Exclude_List applies to files only, all folders searched if recursive
;                              2 - Return folders only  - Include/Exclude_List applies to folders only for searching and return
;                                   Add one or more of the following to $iReturn to omit files/folders with that attribute
;                                   + 4  - Hidden files and folders
;                                   + 8  - System files and folders
;                                   + 16 - Link/junction folders
;                                   Note:  Omitting files/folders uses a different search algorithm and takes approx 50% longer
;                  $iRecur - Optional: specifies whether to search recursively in subfolders and to what level
;                             1 - Search in all subfolders (unlimited recursion)
;                             0 - Do not search in subfolders (Default)
;                             Negative integer - Search in subfolders to specified depth
;                  $iSort - Optional: sort ordered in alphabetical and depth order
;                             0 - Not sorted (Default)
;                             1 - Sorted
;                             2 - Sorted with faster algorithm (assumes files sorted within each folder - requires NTFS drive)
;                  $iReturnPath - Optional: specifies displayed path of results
;                             0 - File/folder name only
;                             1 - Relative to initial path (Default)
;                             2 - Full path included
;                  $iTimer_Limit - Maximum search time in seconds (default 0 = no limit)
;
; Requirement(s).: v3.3.1.1 or higher
; Return values .: Success: One-dimensional array made up as follows:
;                            [0] = Number of Files\Folders returned
;                            [1] = 1st File\Folder
;                            [2] = 2nd File\Folder
;                            ...
;                            [n] = nth File\Folder

But I am not at all sure I will include this in a release version - it seems to me that if you want to search you accept that it might take a while. Of interest, searching my C: drive for exe files found about 5000 in 122 secs - I do not consider that too bad given the size of tree the UDF has to search. ;)

;                                   If recursive Include/Exclude_List applies to files only, all folders are searched unless excluded using $sExclude_List_Folder
;                              1 - Return files only    - Include/Exclude_List applies to files only, all folders searched if recursive
;                              2 - Return folders only  - Include/Exclude_List applies to folders only for searching and return
;                                   Add one or more of the following to $iReturn to omit files/folders with that attribute
;                                   + 4  - Hidden files and folders
;                                   + 8  - System files and folders
;                                   + 16 - Link/junction folders
;                                   Note:  Omitting files/folders uses a different search algorithm and takes approx 50% longer
;                  $iRecur - Optional: specifies whether to search recursively in subfolders and to what level
;                             1 - Search in all subfolders (unlimited recursion)
;                             0 - Do not search in subfolders (Default)
;                             Negative integer - Search in subfolders to specified depth
;                  $iSort - Optional: sort ordered in alphabetical and depth order
;                             0 - Not sorted (Default)
;                             1 - Sorted
;                             2 - Sorted with faster algorithm (assumes files sorted within each folder - requires NTFS drive)
;                  $iReturnPath - Optional: specifies displayed path of results
;                             0 - File/folder name only
;                             1 - Relative to initial path (Default)
;                             2 - Full path included
;                  $iTimer_Limit - Maximum search time in seconds (default 0 = no limit)

But I am not at all sure I will include this in a release version - it seems to me that if you want to search you accept that it might take a while. Of interest, searching my C: drive for exe files found about 5000 in 122 secs - I do not consider that too bad given the size of tree the UDF has to search. ;)

thanks!

i will test it

There are use cases that you did not think about them ...

Hard to explain.

But do not think that your UDF only useful for software for searching files..

Please do try and explain - I am always prepared to adapt my UDFs to meet user requirements, within reason of course. If you can give me some details of the other "use cases" then I might be able to do something to improve the performance of the UDF when it is used "outside the box". ;)

Think about a function that supposed to return output.
And to
return this output, it need to use RecFileListToArray().

The point is that the function should always do this action in less than 3 seconds. if not then my function got wrong input(in this case the input is the path) and the user already aware that he may gave wrong input.

Anyway my function will always return output.

in case that the input is wrong, my software will act wrong anyway and it is not matter if it took 3 seconds or 200 seconds..

so i prefer that it will took 3 seconds.

gil900,

I understand. I did add a specific @error return value so you can detect if the function timed out which you might well need in your case. ;)

can you explain to me how I know if the function timed out?

if the function timed out then i don't get any error.. i get an array that contains all the exe files that your function found

EDIT

Forget it.

I understood myself how to know it.

Thanks

Hi,

For anyone wondering how to detect a time out and who is also too lazy to read the function header, this version of the UDF sets @error to 1 and @extended to 10 if it times out - although all other error conditions take precedence if they occur. ;)
